March, Rally Held In Support Of LA Produce Market Workers

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Labor Leaders Tuesday held a march and rally in support of the workers at the Los Angeles Produce Market.

The march began at 5:15 a.m. at Teamsters Local 630 Hall, 750 S. Stanford Ave. in downtown Los Angeles.

It continued to the nearby Produce Market where a news conference and rally was held.

"The situation here in the produce industry . . . the playing field is so un-level," Teamster Alfredo Salazar said. "We have legitimate companies who have been providing fair wages, working conditions and safety, but there's the majority of other companies that are just undermining the efforts that legitimate companies are providing."

The movement is in remembrance and recognition of Cesar Chavez Day.

"Most of these workers are immigrant workers, don't know their rights. They are intimated," Salazar said.
