Man's Body Found Off Coast Of Southernmost Channel Island

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sheriff's detectives are investigating how a man's body ended up on the ocean floor off the coast of San Clemente Island.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says the unidentified body was discovered Sunday afternoon by a recreational diver. It was about 100 feet underwater.

Sheriff's divers weren't able to retrieve it until Monday morning. It was turned over to the coroner.

San Clemente Island is the southernmost of the Channel Islands that line the Southern California coast.

The island is owned by the U.S. Navy, which uses it for training exercises.

Other Channel Islands include the popular tourist destination of Santa Catalina Island.
