Search Underway To Find Body Of Missing Swimmer In Manhattan Beach

MANHATTAN BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Recovery efforts were underway Wednesday to find the body of a 24-year-old man who was reported missing in the waters off Manhattan Beach.

At this time, the U.S. Coast Guard has called off their search. However, lifeguards and dive teams will continue to look for Hawthorne resident Derrick Jeffries throughout the day.

Around 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Jeffries disappeared in the surf near the 1800 block of The Strand while swimming back to shore with two friends.

According to his friends, Jeffries is a good swimmer. They did not see him go under water.

About a dozen divers used sonar technology in the water north of the pier in an attempt to search for Jeffries.

Jeffries recently got out of the Army and is still an active member of the National Guard, according to family members.

Lifeguards warned the public about strong rip currents in the area.
