Manhattan Beach City Council To Vote On Pier Fishing Ban Following Great White Attack

MANHATTAN BEACH (CBSLA.com) — PETA Tuesday will fly a large banner over Southland beaches protesting fishing off local piers.

The banner, reading "Keep Hookers Off The Pier!", will fly from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Redondo Beach to Zuma Beach in Malibu, the group said.

The banner will fly just hours before the Manhattan Beach City Council will discuss the temporary fishing ban at their pier.

The ban has been in place since July 5 when 49-year-old swimmer Steven Robles was attacked by a great white shark.

Witnesses say a fisherman had been "chumming" the water to attract fish when the shark was hooked just prior to the attack.

Robles suffered non-life threatening injuries to his torso.

A recent study by the Cal State Long Beach Shark Lab counted as many as 2,400 great white sharks off the California coast.

The City Council meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m.
