Man, Woman Found Dead At Base Of Cliff In San Pedro

SAN PEDRO (CBSLA) — A man and a woman were found dead Monday at the bottom of a rocky cliff below Point Fermin Park in San Pedro.

"It took quite an effort from the Los Angeles Fire Department to extract the bodies and bring them up," Sgt. Osvaldo Gonzales, of the Los Angeles Police Department, said. "The height of the cliff is approximately 100 feet."

According to LAFD, crews responded to a call in the 500 block of West Paseo Del Mar for a cliff rescue at about 5:20 p.m.

When they arrived on scene, firefighters found the two young adults dead in the water just below the Point Fermin Lighthouse.

Urban Search and Rescue crews with the Los Angeles County Fire Department repelled down the cliff and were able to recover the bodies.

The circumstances surrounding the incident were not immediately known, and police said they were not certain if the couple fell or jumped.

"This area is fairly well known for suicides," Gonzales said. "However, we have had accidental slips where people are hiking on the top of the cliff. It's very unsteady ground, so it is possible it could have been accidental too."

Police asked anyone who might have seen anything to contact the Los Angeles Police Department.
