Man With Gun On UCI Campus Released After Questioning

IRVINE (AP) — Officials at the University of California, Irvine, say a man detained for carrying a gun on campus was released after being questioned.

University spokeswoman Cathy Lawhon said Wednesday that the man, whose name was not released, has a concealed-weapons permit.

It is illegal to carry weapons on California campuses, even for those with such permits.

Lawhon says the investigation is ongoing.

Students were told to shelter in place around 3 p.m. Tuesday following the report of an armed man.

Lawhon said Tuesday that the man apparently dropped the concealed gun, then picked it up and concealed it again and kept walking.

The man was located about a half-hour later.

The incident came as an afternoon ceremony was being held to install the school's new chancellor.
