Man Who Left Mentone Assisted-Living Facility Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — A man who was reported missing from an assisted-living facility in Mentone on Friday morning was killed by a hit-and-run driver Friday night near West Rialto Avenue and G Street in San Bernardino, police said.

John Preciado, 85, was crossing the street at 8:50 p.m. when he was struck by a car believed to be a  Toyota Corolla, according to San Bernardino Police Lt. Rich Lawhead. The driver failed to stop.

Preciado was taken to Loma Linda Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead early Saturday morning, police said.

Earlier on Friday, San Bernardino County deputies were called to an assisted-living facility at 1376 Jasper Ave., following the report of a missing person. Preciado, who was a diabetic and diagnosed with schizophrenia, had apparently left the facility on foot sometime after midnight, walking west toward Redlands. The accident site is more than 10 miles from the facility.

The San Bernardino Police Department is investigating the incident, and is seeking information on the hit-and-run vehicle. Investigators can be reached by calling 909-384-5742.
