SOUTH LA (CBSLA.COM) — A man died in the hospital on Thursday after he was shot while at the wheel of an SUV that crashed into a South Los Angeles building and catch fire.

Authorities said the man was driving a Chevy Blazer on Thursday afternoon when he was shot and then crashed the SUV into a building on the 100 block of East 50th Street. Before crashing into the building, the Blazer also hit a parked sedan.

The Blazer erupted in flames and was engulfed in fire when LAPD officers arrived to the scene around 3 p.m.

Two LAPD officers pulled the wounded man from the burning SUV. Those officers suffered minor smoke inhalation and were also transported to the hospital.

Thirty-two firefighters responded to the scene and put out the fire in 20 minutes, an LAFD spokesman said. Firefighters also contained fuel leaking from the SUV.

Hours after the crash, the Blazer was still lying incinerated outside of the building. The sedan was also badly burned.

Police said they were searching for a car that fled the scene.
