Driver killed in car-to-car shooting on 710 Freeway in Cudahy

A driver was killed in a car-to-car shooting on the 710 Freeway in Cudahy early Tuesday morning.

The shooting occurred just before 12:30 a.m. on the northbound 710 Freeway, near Firestone Boulevard.

According to California Highway Patrol, after being shot, the victim pulled over to the center median and called 911. He was rushed to St. Francis Medical Center, where he died, CHP confirmed. His name was not immediately released.

"The neighbors around the freeway, the houses, they heard gunshots," CHP Officer Marco Lizarraga said. "So the initial ones who called 911 -- in the process of our officers responding -- the victim also called 911."

Investigators are unsure if the man was targeted or the possible victim of a road rage incident.

Video from the scene showed his car with at least one bullet hole in the rear passenger side window. According to CHP, the victim was driving north on the freeway when a black sedan drove up alongside and someone inside opened fire on his car.

No arrests have been made and there was no suspect information. The suspect vehicle exited the freeway at Florence Avenue.

The northbound 710 Freeway was shut down for several hours while investigators combed the freeway for bullet casings and other evidence. It has since reopened.

Bell Gardens police also responded and were assisting CHP in the investigation.
