Man Shot To Death In Struggle Over Coachella Officer's Baton

COACHELLA (AP) — Authorities say a man has been shot to death during a struggle with a Coachella police officer, during which he tried to take the officer's baton away.

The Coachella Police Department reports the shooting occurred shortly before noon Thursday as the officer was investigating a report that someone had broken into a home and assaulted its owner.

Sgt. Mike Manning says a man outside the home immediately confronted the officer, assuming a "fighting stance."

When he advanced on the officer, she pulled her baton, Manning says, and when he attempted to take it away he was shot.

The man, whose name was not released, died at a hospital.

The officer has been placed on administrative duties while the shooting is investigated.

Her name was not released.
