Man Dies After Confrontation With CHP Officers On I-5 In Irvine

IRVINE (CBSLA.com) — A man was shot and died Monday after an altercation with CHP officers on I-5 near the 133 Freeway, authorities said.

The man in his 30s was taken to a hospital after a confrontation with officers and might also have been struck by a car, the Orange County Fire Authority said. It was unclear if the man was armed.

The man ran across northbound lanes of I-5 before being confronted by California Highway Patrol officers in southbound lanes, the CHP said.

No officers were injured in the shooting, which occurred shortly after 7 p.m.

Traffic was backed up for miles as all southbound lanes of I-5 were closed so authorities could investigate the shooting scene.

It was unclear late Monday night when the freeway would reopen.
