Man Killed At Mixed-Martial Arts Studio In Tustin

TUSTIN (CBSLA.com) — A man was killed Thursday at a mixed-martial arts studio in Tustin.

Police said they received calls about shots fired shortly after noon at the OC Boxing & MMA Academy at 14051 Newport Avenue. When officers arrived, the found the victim.

Rick Myers owns a music store next door. "We heard some pop sound. All the whole crew was running out the front door. My general manager said: 'We're locked down.' I went: 'What's going on?' He said: 'There are shots fired at the boxing place next door.' I said: 'Oh my God!' And the police start showing. Sirens were going. Every thing went crazy."

Tustin police Lt. Bob Wright said the motive of the attack "doesn't appear to be a robbery."

The deadly shooting surprised neighbors, customers and even veteran officers.

"It is surprising for our area. We don't have a lot of this type of crime or violent crime in Tustin," said Lt. Robert Wright of the Tustin Police Department. "So it is surprising when it happens."

The martial arts studio has been open only a few months.

The shooter remains on the loose.
