Man Pleads Not Guilty To Hit-And-Run That Killed 101-Year-Old Man In Boyle Heights
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A 41-year-old man pleaded not guilty Friday to charges stemming from a hit-and-run that killed a 101-year-old pedestrian.
Ricardo Avalos has been charged with one felony county of hit-and-run and one misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter after allegedly hitting Jose Noriega while he was walking in Boyle Heights.
Noriega was walking in a crosswalk at Lorena and Opal streets around 6 a.m. Wednesday when a 1997 Chevrolet Astro van struck him, according to the District Attorney's Office.
The driver fled but witnesses followed and blocked him from getting away a short distance from the accident.
Avalos was arrested at 6:20 a.m. He was booked on $50,000 bail and faces up to four years in state prison if convicted as charged, officials said.
Noriega was transported to County-USC Medical Center where he was pronounced dead just before 8 a.m.
A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Oct. 16.
