Man Pleads In 1989 Slaying Of Santa Ana Woman

SANTA ANA (AP) — A California man has pleaded not guilty to murder in the 1989 stabbing death of a 35-year-old woman in Santa Ana.

The Orange County Register reports 63-year-old Douglas Gutridge will remain behind bars in lieu of $1 million bail after entering his plea on Friday.

Prosecutors say he killed Carla Salazar inside her apartment in June 1989.

The arrest last month came after a newly created cold case task force took over the investigation in July.

Senior deputy district attorney Larry Yellin said in December that the motive for the killing is not clear, but investigators believe the pair had a brief, consensual relationship.

Gutridge is scheduled to return to court for a pre-trial hearing in February.
