Man Perched On Overpass Over 101 Freeway Causing Traffic Nightmare Now In Custody

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — Authorities said a man perched on the edge of an overpass above the Hollywood (101) Freeway in Studio City, causing a traffic nightmare, has been taken into custody Friday. The freeway is expected to reopen shortly.

Authorities were notified about 1:35 p.m. that the man was on an overpass near Lankershim Boulevard and Universal Studios Hollywood, Los Angeles Police Officer Jack Richter said.

The California Highway Patrol closed the northbound side at Lankershim Boulevard and the southbound side at Campo de Cahuenga, according to the CHP.

Authorities tried to coax the man off the bridge while traffic was backed up for miles all the way to Echo Park on the northbound side of the 101 and through the alternate routes.

Firefighters set up airbags below the overpass in case the man jump. About four hours later, he was taken into custody.
