Man Killed When Wheel Pops Off Pickup Truck In San Dimas

SAN DIMAS (CBSLA.com) — A 62-year-old man was killed Thursday while driving on the 210 Freeway when a wheel flew off a pickup truck and struck the victim's Toyota Camry.

David A Ballejos, of San Bernardino, died at the scene, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Rodrigo Jimenez.

The accident occurred around 5:25 a.m. when the left rear wheel came off a pickup truck headed westbound on the freeway and bounced into eastbound traffic.

The wheel struck the hood and windshield of Ballejos' car, causing major blunt force trauma to his head and face, Jimenez said.

The Toyota then careened into a masonry wall and freeway call box before sliding across the San Dimas Avenue on-ramp.

Several other vehicles struck the wheel, but no one else was injured.

The driver of the pickup did not suffer injuries.
