Man Crushed To Death By Boulder While Digging For Water Bottles

SAN JACINTO (CBSLA.com) — The coroner Monday identified a man who was crushed to death by a bolder while digging for plastic bottles.

Timothy McCann, 43, of Hemet, died Saturday afternoon while in the riverbed near Cedar and Chicago avenues, the Riverside County Coroner said.

"While digging one adult male became pinned under a large boulder. The patient sustained serious injuries and perished at the scene," CALFIRE said.

McCann's death was under investigation by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

"He was a very caring a loving person," McCann's girlfriend Jenny Stadig said. "He would do anything for anybody. He had a heart of gold. He would give you the shirt off his back."

McCann was digging for vintage, antique bottles, when the wall of rock came down on him.

"We had pulled out a few bottles and he saw another one, and he was going for it and getting it out, and then that's when it fell," Stadig said.

McCann, who was an avid guitar player, will have a benefit concert in his honor.

"It's still a dream, you know, it's not real, is how you feel," McCann's son Tyler described. "Someone put it this way earlier, something as simple as a picnic gone wrong, basically, is how we put it."
