Man Charged In Stabbing Murder Of High School Student In Long Beach
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — An 18-year-old man was charged Monday in the killing of a Cabrillo High School student in Long Beach.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Giovanny Montelongo of Long Beach faced one count each of murder, second-degree robbery and attempted second-degree robbery.
Montelongo also faced a special-circumstance allegation that the murder was committed during the commission of a robbery, and an allegation that the crimes were committed in association with a criminal street gang, the District Attorney's Office added.
On Thursday, Montelongo allegedly stole 15-year-old Keyshawn Brooks' backpack, and stabbed him to death during an altercation in front of the middle school.
According to prosecutors, Montelongo is also accused of attempting to rob a second victim.
Brooks was rushed to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Montelongo was arrested at his home about an hour after the incident occurred.
Authorities said Montelongo is being held without bail.
If convicted as charged, a decision will be made regarding whether he will face the death penalty or be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
