Man Arrested For Chasing Photographer With Pickax In Santa Ana

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — A 23-year-old man was arrested Thursday morning on suspicion of waving a pickax and threatening a photographer with it.

Isaiah Gassaway of Santa Ana was booked on charges of attempted assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery and possession of a stolen vehicle, Santa Ana police said.

Shortly after 9 a.m., police got reports of a man waving a pickax at the intersection of Ross and Civic Center. When officers arrived, they determined that Gassaway got angry at a photographer who had been taking photos of the homeless population, then pulled out a pickax and chased him with it, police said.

Further investigation determined that the car Gassaway had been seen in had been reported stolen out of Santa Ana, officials said.

A second victim had been recording the incident on his phone when Gassaway confronted him with the pickax and demanded his phone. When the victim refused to hand over his phone and got into his car in an attempt to get away, Gassaway hit the car with the pickax, causing minor damage, police said.
