Man Accused In OC Fatal Hit-And-Run Accident In Custody

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A 56-year-old man was in custody Thursday for allegedly killing a man with his vehicle and fleeing from the scene.

According to the Newport Beach Police Department, officers were sent around 2:56 a.m. to the area of East Coast Highway at Newport Coast Drive, for report of a person lying in the road.

Once on scene, officers located a victim, later identified as Travis Marton, 24, of Valencia, suffering from critical injuries as a result of being hit by a vehicle.

Authorities declared the victim dead at the scene.

Ronald Aviles, of San Clemente, was identified and detained about 10 minutes later by officers in Laguna Beach.

He is currently being held on $50,000 at the Newport Beach Police Department's Jail Facility on suspicion of felony hit and run charges.

Officers explained alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor in the crash.
