Man, 20, Convicted Of Stabbing Jogger In 2012

WESTMINSTER (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a 20-year-old man was convicted Friday of attempted murder for stabbing a jogger in 2012.

Jurors found James Anthony Rivas of Rossmoor guilty of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and mayhem, the Orange County District Attorney's office said in a statement.

The statement said the charges stemmed from the Oct. 23, 2012, attack on a 27-year-old woman while she jogged in Rossmoor.

Prosecutors said Rivas stabbed the woman multiple times with a knife and cut her face, back, arm and hand.

The woman managed to knock the knife out of Rivas' hand, who then fled, authorities said.

The woman was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Rivas was arrested two days later.

He faces a maximum term of 13 years in prison during his sentencing hearing, which was scheduled for May 22.
