MADD Holds Vigil For 6 Killed In Alleged DUI Wrong-Way Crash

DIAMOND BAR (CBSLA.com) — Mother's Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the LA County Sheriff's Department Wednesday teamed up to hold a vigil in honor of the six people killed Sunday when an alleged wrong-way drunk driver caused a three-vehicle accident on the 60 Freeway in Fontana.

Crystal Cruz attended the vigil and said the suspect was also speeding -- at times exceeding 100 mph.

At the vigil, a sheriff's department official said the average person drives under the influence as many as 80 times before they are actually caught.

The message, he said, was clear -- always have a designated driver or take a cab.

"I don't know a taxicab ride in the world that costs $10,000 for your first time DUI," he said, "and if, God forbid, you happen to hurt someone, you go to jail and now the victim's families are going to be forever touched by this."

The same deputy told Cruz that you have a better chance of being killed by a drunk driver than you do being shot.
