Lost Teen Hikers Rescued In Malibu

MALIBU (CBSLA.com) — A pair of teenage hikers were rescued late Wednesday night after becoming lost in a Malibu Canyon.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Search and Rescue team was contacted around 9 p.m. about the missing hikers in the Newton Canyon area, officials said.

"The two hikers, an 18-year-old male from West Hills and a 17-year-old female from Chatsworth, along with their small dog, set out for a hike at 3 p.m. from the Newton Canyon trail-head, off of Kanan Road," Cpt. David Katz said.

The teens, who realized they were lost around 6 p.m., called a parent for help when darkness fell and the weather became cold and rainy.

Search and Rescue workers were unable to contact the teens after their cell phones died.

"After about an hour of searching in near-zero visibility conditions, the two hikers were finally located," Capt. Katz said.

The teens were reunited with their family at the trail-head.

It was unknown if they suffered any injuries.
