Water Main Break Floods Long Beach Intersection

LONG BEACH (CBSLA) — A water main break flooded streets in Long Beach Wednesday.

The break happened in an 8-inch pipe at Metz Street and Palo Verde Avenue at about 12:30 p.m. The water has since been shut off, but water has pooled in the intersection and is 4 to 5 feet deep in some places.

Crews on the scene were initially concerned about a sinkhole that could form in the street.

About 27 customers are without water, and service could be off well into the afternoon. The lack of water forced Sandra Osburn to walk to the nearest grocery store with her children to get clean water to make formula.

"It's been a little bit of chaos with a new baby and a 3-year-old," she said.

Palo Verde Avenue was closed between Wardlow Road and Spring Street while crews repaired the water main.
