Long Beach Police Capture Man After 5 1/2-Hour Standoff

LONG BEACH (AP) — Long Beach police have captured a man they say hit an officer in the face with a gun and then fled to a home, prompting a 5 ½-hour standoff.

Police say around 2 a.m. Saturday, the man got into a fight with an officer who stopped him at a closed park.

Authorities say he hit the officer in the face with a handgun and ran to a nearby home, where he refused to leave.

A SWAT team was called and nearby homes were evacuated.

Police were able to detain the man at around 7:30 a.m.

City News Service says the officer who was struck had only minor injuries.
