Mother Of Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia Dies From Complications Of COVID-19

LONG BEACH (CBSLA) — The mother of Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia has died from complications of COVID-19.

Gaby O'Donnell was 61 years old. She and her husband, Greg O'Donnell, both tested positive earlier this month. He remains hospitalized and on a ventilator.

"It is with deep sadness that I share that my mother, Gaby O'Donnell, has passed away due to complications from COVID-19. My brother and I are heartbroken," Garcia said in a statement.

Garcia previously said that his mother worked at a healthcare clinic. In sharing the news of her death, he described her as "the kindest and most compassionate person we've ever known."

"She immigrated from Peru to the United States in search of the American Dream -- and she found it. She became a healthcare worker, caring for thousands of patients over her career and assisting nurses and doctors who she loved dearly. She loved to help people and lived a happy and joyous life," Garcia said in the statement.
