Local Man Teaching Kids The Science Behind Ice Cream

NEWBURY PARK (CBSLA.com) — If there is one thing that most kids like, it's ice cream.

What better way, then, to grab their attention and to teach them about science than to do it by making the tasty treat.

"Most kids get inspired by, not the details of science, but the imagination and fun of it," said Rob West, who owns Subzero Ice Cream in Simi Valley and Laguna Niguel.

The dessert chain uses liquid nitrogen to freeze ice cream in a matter of seconds.

West spends his free time going to local schools to show kids what the negative 321-degree liquid can do like turning a water bottle into a rocket.

He even dipped a rose into liquid nitrogen and caused it to freeze and shatter into pieces.

The demonstration left 5 to 8 year olds at the Conejo Valley School District in awe.

Though the kids are young, the goal is they start thinking about science as a career.
