Driver Arrested After Live Grenade Found In Santa Ana Car
SANTA ANA (CBSLA) – A gang member was arrested after a live pineapple grenade was found in his car during a traffic stop in Santa Ana Monday night.
The grenade was discovered on the front passenger seat after Santa Ana police gang detectives pulled a car over in the area of West 1st and North Fairview streets just before 8 p.m.
When detectives asked the driver, identified as 44-year-old Gregorio Rojas of Santa Ana, if he had something illegal in the car, he informed them that he had a grenade, police said.
Police shut down 1st Street between Fairview and Jackson streets, and the Orange County Sheriff's Department bomb squad was called to the scene.
The bomb squad used a robot to safely detonate the live grenade. Officers then raided Rojas' home, where they found four loaded handguns and methamphetamine.
It is unclear why Rojas had a grenade in the car. Rojas was arrested on one count each of possession of a destructive device, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a controlled substance with a firearm.
