Little League Game In Beaumont Turns Into Memorial For Fallen San Bernardino Officer

BEAUMONT (CBSLA.com) — A little league game in Beaumont Friday evening turned into a memorial for a fallen San Bernardino police officer.

The officer, Shaun Jarvis, died Thursday in an off-duty motorcycle accident.

The kids paid tribute to Jarvis who, in his spare time, was their coach. Jarvis' 5-year-old son, Griffin, is also the team's first baseman.

"You can feel him here. With the law enforcement community all around us. You can't help but to feel him here," said family friend Jesse Joyce.

CBS's Crystal Cruz said Joyce is now taking over the coaching reigns for his friend.

Jarvis was a veteran with the police force. He was hit by a car while off-duty.

"It's an honor for me to come in and do my part and make sure the kids are okay," said Joyce.

In a show of respect and camaraderie, both teams wore Griffin's number and his last name which was also written on the baseball diamond.

Jarvis was not only remembered as a great dad but also as a great motorcycle officer who recently passed his field test in March. He let his friends and family know the good news by posting a picture of his helmet on Facebook.

"He had a lot of heart and a lot of drive and he did really well," said Sgt. Vicki Cervantes who was also Jarvis' boss.

Cervantes says Jarvis was a nice addition to the traffic unit.

"Shaun came in in January with five DUI arrests and since then he's arrested another 16," she said.

Cruz said those interested in making a donation to the family should contact the San Bernardino City Police Department.
