'Little Free Library' Movement Helps To Get Kids Reading

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — What started as a small community project has expanded into a national and global movement to get kids reading.

"The Little Free Library" was created by Todd Bol in 2010 and has since been picked up in 80 countries around the world, and has resulted in about 1,000 miniature libraries popping up per month.

"I feel like a dad with lots of kids," Bol told CBS2's Amber Lee. "I feel like they're all part of us, and it excites me. Sixty percent of the people make their own, and forty percent buy them from us."

The Little Free Library website features images of the small libraries appearing around the world.

Locally, the movement has received ardent support from the LAPD.

"...we're often told it's like days of yore, where neighbors actually know each other."

The small libraries function as a "free book exchange", where you take a book and leave a book in its place.
