Lifeguards Reopen LA County Beaches After Lightning Scare

MALIBU (AP) — Los Angeles County lifeguards have reopened miles of beaches that were closed because of concerns about lightning from a fast-moving storm.

Beaches from Malibu south to Torrance were shut for as long as three hours Tuesday afternoon and evening as lightning struck coastal cities.

However, no ocean strikes were reported.

Lifeguard spokeswoman Lidia Barillas says Topanga lifeguards did have to rescue a wind-surfer who was unable to come ashore because of gusting winds from the advancing storm front. A second wind-surfer managed to make it ashore without help.

Meanwhile, rain caused flooding to some streets and a freeway off-ramp in San Diego County and caused power outages to about 3,500 San Diego Gas and Electric customers.

The National Weather Service said an inch of rain fell in parts of San Diego.
