Lifeguard Credited With Saving Girl, 4, Who Nearly Drowned In Irvine Pool

IRVINE (CBSLA.com)   — A lifeguard in Irvine is being called a hero after she saved the life of a 4-year-old girl who nearly drowned in a community pool Saturday.

It's a story that is Only On 9.

The incident happened late in the afternoon at the Irvine Outdoor Education Center in Orange.

KCAL9's Brittney Hopper spoke to the lifeguard who performed CPR on the young girl.

Because of Kaitlyn Truman's quick response the little girl survived.

Truman -- a lifeguard for the past six years -- said the child was playing on the steps of the pool and supervised by her parents.

Within minutes, however, the little girl was face down in the pool.

"She wasn't responsive, she was limp," said Truman. "Her skin was pale. She had foam around her mouth and she was just spitting up water and vomit. But she had no pulse. She had no breaths."

Truman heard screams and leaped into action and performed CPR.

Within four minutes, paramedics arrived and by that time the child was breathing again.

"I was shaking, I couldn't stop shaking," Truman says, "I was just like 'Wow, I've actually saved somebody with the training that I've had."

According to Truman, paramedics told her the child will be alright.
