LAX Runway Improvements Could Result In Flight Delays

WESTCHESTER (CBSLA.com) — A three-year construction project at LAX will begin Friday that could result in flight delays.

The project will upgrade the Runway Safety Areas which provide a buffer zone in case a plane overshoots or veers off during takeoff or landing.

As a result, the construction will require rolling closures of runways. Passengers could experience delays or extended wait times aboard planes similar to what they would experience during bad weather.

The improvements are mandated by the federal government and construction is expected to continue through June 2018, according to airport officials.

The upgrades have already been completed at LA/Ontario International Airport and Van Nuys Airport, according to LA World Airports.
