LAUSD To Pay Another $4.5M To Former Miramonte Students

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Los Angeles Unified School District officials have agreed to pay another $4.5 million to former Miramonte Elementary School students.

Former teacher Mark Berndt pleaded no contest to 23 counts of lewd acts on more than 50 children and is now serving a 25-year sentence in state prison.

Berndt, 62, took photos of students while they were bound and gagged in his classroom. He is believed to committed the crimes between 2005 and 2010 before his arrest in January 2012.

The district has now paid nearly $175 million, the most the district has ever paid in claims related to sexual misconduct.
