LAUSD Students Could Possibly Start School After Labor Day In 2017
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education will consider a resolution Tuesday calling for a later start to the school year.
The resolution requests for the school year to start no earlier than the day after Labor Day, beginning with the 2017-18 school year.
This year, classes began on Aug. 16.
According to board members, the district has received complaints about the hot weather at the beginning of the school year, which forces students to remain indoors and limits their physical activity.
Families have also complained that they are unable to travel due to "affordability and time-off periods" that coincide with the August start period.
District officials said the change bolsters scores on Advanced Placement exams in the spring and allows the school year to end in June, giving students more options for college and university summer programs, along with summer jobs.
The 2016-17 school year is scheduled to end June 9.
