Laurel Canyon Boulevard Partially Reopens In Studio City

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — Laurel Canyon Boulevard partially reopened Monday while crews continued to make repairs on a massive sinkhole in Studio City.

One lane of Laurel Canyon Boulevard was open in both directions between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday. Laurel Canyon Boulevard was closed from Moorpark Street to Ventura Boulevard from 8 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday while crews installed a sewer bypass line to divert the flow away from the sinkhole, according to the Emergency Management Department. A permanent fix for the sinkhole will take between two and three weeks.

The sinkhole swallowed two vehicles around 8 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Woodbridge and Laurel Canyon. One driver had to be rescued by firefighters after getting trapped in the sinkhole. CBS2 learned that she is a local makeup artist. A witness described how rescuers pulled her to safety.

"I saw the fireman put the ladder down the hole, saw her climb up and then hug the fireman saying, 'thank you for getting me out of that hole,'" witness Elaine Klein said.

Engineers believe an erosion on a sewage pipe caused the earth to open up during heavy rainfall.
