Woman, 77, Beaten With Ax Handle; Grandson In Custody

ALTADENA (CBSLA.com) — A 23-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of beating his grandmother with an ax handle, according to sheriff's deputies.

Authorities were called to the 1700 block of North Allen Avenue in Altadena shortly before 8 p.m. Friday.

According to a LASD spokesperson, a woman called 911 to report her neighbor was on the front porch of a home covered in blood.

Deputies arrived to find the 77-year-old victim suffering from significant head injuries and stab wounds to her torso.

The victim was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and was undergoing surgery Friday night, according to the spokesperson.

Investigators say the assailant used two weapons in the attack.

"They found a blunt object, which appears to be an ax handle at this time. But the knife which was used in the stabbing has not been located," Lt. Cruz Solis said.

Detectives are interviewing the grandson and say they have not yet determined a motive.

The woman remains listed in critical condition.
