LAPD On High Alert After Violent Crime Spike In South LA
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A recent spike in violent crimes in South Los Angeles has the LAPD on high alert.
There have been six shootings in two days, including one Tuesday morning involving a 13-year-old girl struck by a stray bullet at a bus stop.
After hearing that gang-related assaults are up 25 percent since the beginning of the year, some residents say they welcome heightened police presence.
"I feel a lot better now. I don't know if it's growing up and getting used to it. ... But [it's] not like before, like in the '90s," resident Alex Solis said. "I'm still happy to be here and be part of the community."
"I'm happy. They're doing the work," another man added.
LAPD's modified tactical alert, which resulted in additional uniformed officers on the streets, was lifted Tuesday evening.
A spokesperson for the department said it could be put back in place at any time.
