Grand Theft Auto Suspect In Taxi Hands Out Cash, High-Fives Bystanders During Police Chase

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The LAPD says a man in a stolen lime-green taxi led officers on a pursuit Friday through South Los Angeles.

It began around 1:30 p.m. in Exposition Park, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The armed suspect carjacked a Green Bell taxi cab driver in the 5000 block of Cimarron Street.

SKY9 was overhead as the low-speed chase dragged on through several South L.A. communities.

Bystanders were taken by surprise when the suspect handed them money and offering high-fives in the Watts area.

As news spread of the chase, crowds cheered on the driver, and children ran after the taxi.

Officers were able to bring the chase to a close by employing a PIT maneuver, pinning the taxi between two patrol cars.

The man, who has not been identified, was arrested without incident.
