LAPD Says No Shots Fired After Report Of Robbery At Westfield Topanga Mall
CANOGA PARK (CBSLA) — Authorities on Sunday were responding to the Westfield Topanga mall following a report of a possible shooting and/or robbery.
Upon arrival, police said via Twitter that there was no evidence of a shooting, but suspect that a smash-and-grab robbery had unfolded.
The LAPD says the incident unfolded in the 6600 block of Topanga Canyon. Patrons were told to expect a heavy police presence, and asked the public to avoid the area.
Police planned to clear the mall, as police continued to search for the suspects.
Two people have been detained for questioning, police said. Late Sunday, CBS2/KCAL9's Cristy Fajardo reported the two suspects were arrested on burglary and grand theft charges.
It was that burglary that apparently touched off a panic among many shoppers -- many of who went on social media as they sheltered in place -- believing there was an active shooter somewhere inside the mall.
The LAPD determined no shots were fired.
