LAPD officers shoot man with large piece of glass in Koreatown

Los Angeles police officers shot a man who was allegedly using a large piece of glass to harm himself in the Koreatown area on Friday morning.

They were called to the 800 block of S. Vermont Avenue at around 7:15 a.m. after learning of an assault with a deadly weapon, LAPD officers told CBS Los Angeles. Callers told police that a man, since identified as 35-year-old Freisman Sanchez, had broken the windows of a business in the area and was using large shards of the broken glass to stab himself.

"As officers arrived at the scene, they observed Sanchez in the middle of the street with his shirt covered in blood and a piece of broken glass in his hand," said a news release from LAPD. They said that they attempted to communicate with Sanchez, but he refused to comply with their demands and began to walk away from the area.

As additional units arrived at the scene, however, Sanchez allegedly began to run towards officers, which prompted them to open fire.

"Sanchez was struck by gunfire and collapsed on the sidewalk a short distance away," police said. "An arrest team was assembled, and Sanchez was taken into custody without further incident."

Sanchez was taken to the hospital in critical condition for both gunshot wounds and self-inflicted stab wounds, police said.

He was subsequently arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. His booking is pending the end of his medical treatment, police said.

No other injuries were reported in the incident, which is being investigated by LAPD's Force Investigation Division.
