Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak's Daughter Dies After 'Lengthy Illness'

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com/AP) — The 15-year-old daughter of Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak died Monday morning after a long illness, according to a statement released by the team.

Alina Claire Kupchak, the daughter of Kupchak and his wife Claire, "passed away this morning at the age of 15 after a lengthy illness."

"The family asks for and appreciates their privacy at this difficult time, and would like to express their gratitude for everyone's love, support, thoughts and prayers," the team said in a statement.

That's a hard one for everybody, losing a child," Clippers coach Doc Rivers said in opening his pregame remarks. "On behalf of the Clippers, we want to send out our blessings."

Kupchak has been the general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers since 2000, when he took over for Hall of Famer Jerry West. During his time as GM, the team won five NBA Finals championships. He played in the NBA for 10 years, retiring in 1986.

Kupchak and his wife also have an 18-year-old son, Maxwell.
