LA Zoo Announces Birth Of Male Giraffe

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)   — The Los Angeles Zoo has announced the birth of a male giraffe.

Bust out some huge diapers. The "little" baby Masai giraffe is just under 6 feet tall and 130 pounds.

The baby, who arrived Oct. 9, is the first calf born to 4-year-old Zainabu.

Zoo officials said mother and baby are doing fine.

"Zainabu is doing a great job as a first-time mother," said Mike Bona, an animal keeper at the zoo. "The baby was born at night, and Zainabu didn't need any assistance from Animal Care staff. I encourage guests to come out and see the calf while he's still young because they can grow to be nearly 10 feet by their first birthday."

Giraffes are the world's tallest land mammal. Masai giraffes can grow up to 17 feet tall and weigh 2,700 pounds.

The baby will be introduced to the media Thursday morning.

The male calf can be seen with the rest of the giraffe herd on exhibit daily, weather permitting.
