La Puente Man Missing After Leaving For Hike In Sierra Madre

SIERRA MADRE (CBSLA.com) — The search for a missing hiker in Sierra Madre was expected to resume at 6 a.m. Saturday morning.

John Richard King, 63, left his La Puente home at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday to go hiking at Chantry Flats but never came home.

His vehicle was found in the parking area of Chantry Flats.

King's family said he is an avid hiker in good shape and hikes in the area almost every other day.

"We didn't hear from hear. So [we] tried calling him. Nothing. Trying our best to stay positive. We know he's experienced. So hopefully, he's out there," said his son Scott King.

The terrain in the area is steep and rugged. Some of the trails have big drops. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, it received about 100 calls last year from people who needed help.
