LA County Jail Beating Case Settled For $1M
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man who said he was beaten by sheriff's deputies while visiting his brother at a Los Angeles County jail will receive more than $1 million to settle a civil rights lawsuit.
The Los Angeles Times says lawyers for Gabriel Carrillo announced the settlement Thursday.
Carrillo said he was attacked in February 2011 at the Men's Central Jail in Los Angeles after bringing a cellphone to a waiting area — a violation of jail rules. The suit says deputies handcuffed Carrillo to a chair and beat and pepper-sprayed him until he blacked out.
He faced battery and other charges, but they were later dropped.
The case was among those the FBI examined in a probe of alleged jail guard abuses and resulted in criminal charges against five employees.
