LA City Council OKs Move Toward Returning Airport Control To Ontario
ONTARIO (AP) — The Los Angeles City Council has approved an agreement to settle all legal claims in a step toward returning struggling LA/Ontario International Airport to local control after three decades.
The 13-0 vote during closed session Wednesday settles litigation dating to 2013.
Under the ownership transfer, Los Angeles World Airports would receive $190 million over 10 years to reimburse it for the cost of running and improving the airport 35 miles east of downtown LA. Ontario also would assume airport debts, bringing the cost of the deal to about $250 million.
The agreement becomes final when the Ontario International Airport Authority OKs it. The authority then needs Federal Aviation Administration certification to run the airport.
Ontario turned over airport operations to Los Angeles in 1967 and sold it outright in 1985.
