Kuehl Leads Close Third District's Supervisor Race Over Shriver

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The tight race for the Third District's Supervisor was too close to call during Midterm Elections on Tuesday night.

Sheila Kuehl held a close lead with 51% of the vote to Bobby Shriver's 49% at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, with 123 of 982 precincts reporting in.

Both candidates look to replace  Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, who has represented the Third District since 1994 and is leaving office due to term limitations. Yaroslavsky did not endorse one candidate or the other, contributing to the race's suspenseful proceedings on Tuesday night.

Kuehl, 73, and a 14-year veteran of the state legislature, had the public support of several dozen current and retired elected officials, plus major unions like the Service Employees International Union Local 721 and the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor.

In June's primary, Kuehl drew 36 percent of the vote, while Shriver took 29 percent.

Both candidates expressed cautious optimism from their respective camps on Tuesday night.

"...we have an amazing coalition of people who I've worked for — civil rights, the environment, women's issues and children's issues and transportation," Kuehl said. "And they all came together, because, of course, when people vote, they're expressing a hope."
