Kickstarter Tells Users They Were Hacked

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) —  First it was Target and then Neiman Marcus. Then it happened to SnapChat. Now it is Kickstarter's turn.

To be hacked, that is.

The crowd-funding site sent out an email  telling their users their accounts may have been compromised after the company's website was hacked.

The email read as follows, "On Wednesday night, law enforcement officials contacted Kickstarter and alerted us that hackers had sought and gained unauthorized access to some of our customers' data. No credit card data of any kind was accessed by hackers."

The company insisted no financial data was stolen but still suggested users change their passwords. The company said they immediately beefed up their cyber security.

Kickstarter, for the uninitiated, helps raise money for projects and product launches. The projects include Hollywood movies, documentaries, books.

The new "Veronica Mars" movie is perhaps the most high-profile Kickstarter success story to date.

Reporting for KCAL9, Cristy Fajardo said Kickstarter is not saying exactly how many people were affected.

She said federal agents were investigating and trying to track down the responsible hackers.
