Compton Mayor Presents Grammy-Winning Rapper Kendrick Lamar With Key To The City

COMPTON (CBSLA.com) — Grammy-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar was presented with the key to the city today, Compton officials announced Saturday.

At 10 a.m., Mayor Aja Brown and the City Council handed the 28-year-old entertainer the key to the city in front of the MLK Monuent at Compton City Hall.

"Kendrick Lamar is a phenomenal artist whose work has served as a catalyst to raise a new level of consciousness for this generation," said Brown. "His message challenges the status quo and motivates listeners to rethink our society's institutions."

Lamar was born in Compton and was a straight-A student at the city's Centennial High School, according to a statement released by city officials.

He served as the 63rd grand marshal of the Compton Christmas Parade in 2015.

Lamar received a total of seven nominations at the 2014 Grammy Awards.

In 2015, he won Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for his song "I."
