LAPD Officers Cleared In Excessive Force Case Filed By Former Banker

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Two Los Angeles police officers were cleared of all wrongdoing in a multimillion lawsuit filed by former bank executive, Brian Mulligan.

A jury of eight people returned a verdict in favor of officers James Nichols and John Miller on Friday afternoon after deliberating for just over four hours.

Mulligan, a one-time Universal and Deutsche Bank executive, accused the officers of using excessive force while he was in police custody and of falsely imprisoning him in 2012. The encounter occurred near Occidental College.

Images of Mulligan shortly after he was arrested showed a severely beaten face. According to CBS2's Dave Lopez, Mulligan sustained 15 broken bones in his nose alone. He claimed that officers hit him with a baton.

Both officers denied the allegation, stating that Mulligan fell and hit his face on the curb.

Mulligan had been seeking $20 million.

Attorneys for the officers argued that Mulligan was under the influence of bath salts during the alleged confrontation.

Mulligan admitted that he had taken bath salts in the past but said that he was not under the influence on the night in question.
